Chelsea certainly have a score to settle with Barcelona.Neutral
observers will acknowledge the Blues did not get the rub of the
green,to put it mildly, when they played Barca in the semi-final at
home in 2009. The Blues were denied a succession of penalties by
referee Tom Henning Ovrebo before Andres Iniesta equalized deep into
stoppage-time.
Chelsea’s players lost it at the final whistle, with Didier Drogba in
particular letting fly with a few choice words at the ref. He
was banned for three games because of it.
It’s an old grudge. Problem is so are the Chelsea players.Frank
Lampard, Drogba and John Terry still carry the memory of that night
but their footballing frames are not what they were three years ago
when they were terrorizing the Premier League and knocking on the door
of the Champion’s League final.
Chelsea’s interim manager, Roberto Di Matteo, will have a strong case
for making his job permanent if he overcomes Barcelona. And he claims
they have the team to do it.
“We will find a strategy that will suit our players and our team to
face Barcelona,” Di Matteo told the Daily Mail. “I think it will be a
combination (of playing to our strengths and attempting to cancel out
their players). “They obviously have some individual players that are a
big threat and very dangerous, but we also have to play our game and
play to our strengths.”
Meaning Chelsea’s player will be under orders to be in Barca’s face at
every turn once the ball crosses the halfway line. They will be hoping
the ref is a fan of the more physical approach of premier league sides
or this could be over quickly.Still, expect a few cards early on as
Chelsea try to send a message. The Blues will absorb the pressure and
hope to strike on the counter.
If there was ever a game for Fernando Torres to rise to the occasion
this is it. He could not only play his way back into the Spanish
national team – all of Spain will be watching this game – but repay
Chelsea fans who have backed him since arrived at Stamford Bridge.
Prediction:Chelsea 1-0, 6 yellow cards, 1 red
